TITLE:
An Abundance of Katherines
AUTHOR:
John Green
SYNOPSIS OF THE PLOT:
Colin Singleton has had 19 girlfriends who concidencially were called Katherine and all of them had dumped him. Colin was a disowned, child prodigy. After the 19th heartbreak, he decides to go in a road trip with his over-weigh bestfriend called Hassan Harbish. The purpose of this trip was to prove a theorem the genius created which in hopes predicted the future of a relationship to keep it. Colin and Hassan traveled from Chicago to the grave of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in a town called Gutshot after convincing their parents it was a great idea for Colin´s mental and heart health. During the trip, the Katherines´ catcher catched a non-Katherine´s attention. He said her smile could end wars and cure cancer.
SETTING:
Almost all the story takes place in a small town called Gutshot that is located in Tennessee. Colin and Hassan decided to go to this town only because they saw a sign for visiting the grave of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. As it is a small town, Lindsey´s mother´s factory makes the town flow, and when it is financially breaking, Colin and Hassan work to save it.
PROTAGONIST AND ANTAGONIST:
The protagonist of this book is Colin Singleton, he is a serious, smart guy who thinks during all the story that he is only someone nobody likes and is focused on the fact he has been dumped by 19 Katherines; except at the end of the book when he realizes he can be whoever he wants to be and feels happy about it.
The antagonist of the story is the other Colin (known as TOC). Besides sharing the protagonist name, he has got the girl. And he doesn´t give a shit about it because he hooks up with Katrina anyway, he is a total jerk.
MAIN CONFLICT:
Katherine number 19 dumps Colin Singleton, and for helping in the situation his bestfriend, Hassan, decides to go on a trip with him where Colin tried to prove his theorem about relationships.
WHY DO I LIKE THE STORY:
Personally I love the author, John Green, I have read several of his books and I consider them as something to enjoy in my free time. This particular story catched my full attention specially because of the end of it when John Green leaves us that valuable moral, you can be whoever you want to be, life gives you opportunities and you decide what to do with them, if you don´t like something of you just change it and make it desirable.
WHAT DO I LIKE ABOUT THE WRITING OF THE STORY:
The book is not written chronologically and I like that because you figure out some of the story detailes while you are reading it. For example, the Katherines love stories with Colin are told in flashbacks and throughout the book.
RECOMMENDATION OF THE BOOK:
I truly recommend this book, not only because it is written by one of the authors I love the most, but also because it is an excellent way to entertain yourself and distract from whatever is happening to you. I recommend this book to my friends and also teenagers, specially girls, as it is a love story and we love them.
